Keller Williams Palos Verdes Realty, Red Day

Give Where You Live, May 12th, 2011

Rolling Hills Estates, April, 26, 2011: On May 12th 2011, thousands of Keller Williams Realty agents across the country, choose to put their businesses on hold, put their “Red” shirts on and focus their time, energies and resources, towards giving back to their local communities – in honor of our 3rd Annual Red Day.

This year, our Keller Williams Palos Verdes Realty office, is facilitating a food drive to benefit two local charities who are very much in need, Harbor Interfaith in San Pedro and House of Miracles in Redondo Beach.

Harbor Interfaith assists 12,000 people annually to get up and get away from poverty and back on the road to self-sufficiency.

House of Miracles is also a non-profit organization that focuses on helping people achieve a sober and successful lifestyle on their road to recovery.

To help, we need donations of non-perishable groceries as well as hygienic products. This includes canned goods, pastas, basic staples like rice and pastas, soups and any other food items that promote a healthy diet. They also need personal hygiene items such as tooth paste, tooth brushes, shampoo and soap. You may find that you already have some of these items in your pantry. Or perhaps, you may be reminded of it on your next trip to the grocery store.

Then, May 12th, you can either drop them off from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm at Ralph’s on Hawthorne Blvd. at Crest Road in Rancho Palos Verdes or Pavilions on Silver Spur Road in Rolling Hills Estates. Or, if you can’t make it to the store that day, you can also call the Keller Williams Palos Verdes Realty office to have an agent pick up the items from your house. Whatever it takes, we are here to help!

The largest animal on the planet is off Long Beach, CA. The Aquarium of the Pacific and Harbor Breeze Cruises invite the public to set sail for the chance to see and hear endangered blue whales. The nonprofit Aquarium now features a new whale-listening device onboard, becoming one of the few places in the world where the public can listen to the blue whales and dolphins they see.

“A female blue whale in Hawaii can hear the song of a male calling from California. Now visitors will have the chance to listen in on this phenomenon,” said Michele Sousa, Aquarium of the Pacific senior mammal expert. Through the Blue Whale combo ticket, the public can embark on the new whale watch and also visit the Aquarium to explore its newest exhibit about whale communication.

Inside the Aquarium, guests can learn more about the largest whale and now also about the smallest and most critically endangered. The Aquarium recently unveiled a new vaquita whale kiosk featuring conservation educational materials and rare footage of this elusive animal found only in Mexico’s Gulf of California. It is part of the Aquarium’s award-winning Whales: Voices in the Sea exhibit. The update was made possible by the Pacific Life Foundation, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and the NOAA Fisheries Service and was developed by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography with the Aquarium of the Pacific and Cortina Productions.

Guests can now explore this bilingual English-Spanish kiosk exhibit at the Aquarium to learn more about various whale species and discover the new blue whale-listening device onboard the boat. “Through these trips and the exhibit, we hope to connect the public to whales like never before and to inspire them to help protect our ocean,” said Sousa. The public can visit the Aquarium of the Pacific and embark on Harbor Breeze Cruises for a three and a half hour whale watch excursion with Aquarium experts daily at 11:30 a.m. & 3:00 p.m.

Excursions take place onboard a specialized whale watching, high-speed catamaran docked next to the Aquarium. The Blue Whale & Sea Life Cruise combo ticket is available for purchase on-site at Aquarium of the Pacific and may be purchased in advance by calling 562-590-3100. Prices are $62.95 adult 12+, $54.95 senior 62+, and $38.95 child (includes whale watch & Aquarium admission). For more information, click here.

As part of our Going Green series, we are taking a look at different ways to make our homes and lives more energy efficient here in the Los Angeles South Bay.

One way is to install a simple Energy Usage Monitor. The idea is the more you know how your energy (and money) is spent. The more “power” you have to make changes.

This monitor allows you to see real time how much power is used by that power strip behind the entertainment center…even when everything is turned off. It allows for quick calculations of how much energy is used for half loads of laundry or the dishwasher. You can monitor your energy usage when the thermostat is set for 76 verses 73 degrees.

One of the best parts about these devices is it offers an opportunity to teach your kids about the importance of saving electricity, or perhaps they will teach you! Kids seem to love the real time updates to their impact on the energy consumption.  We’ll post an update on how this device affects our own usage. Would also love to hear what you think!

Also, we found these products on Amazon for half the price shown in the video.
