Sandstone Peak in the Santa Monica Mountains

Looking for something to do outside the South Bay? Sandstone Peak in the Santa Monica Mountains features fantastic views and the trailhead can be reached in under two hours from the South Bay.

Located about 50 miles west of downtown LA, Sandstone Peak is the tallest point in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3,111 feet. The summit can be reached via a 6.25-mile loop with 1,075 feet of elevation gain that offers expansive views of the range.

The Sandstone Peak trailhead parking is about one mile past Circle X Ranch (formerly Camp Circle X, a Boy Scout camp) on Yerba Buena Road. The gravel parking lot has plenty of parking. Near the entrance is a sign with details on the area and the requisite warnings about wildlife and safety. The trail begins at the gate and proceeds up hill.

A steep 1.5-mile hike to the top offers commanding views of the ocean and inland valleys. At the peak you’ll find a memorial to Herbert Allen, the namesake of Mount Allen. Built into the memorial is an old-fashioned brass-covered mail slot which contains the summit register. Sign your name to record your ascent and take some time here to enjoy the breathtaking views. You are 1,075 feet above the trailhead at the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. On a clear day, views can include the Channel Islands, Mount Baldy, and the Topatopa Mountains.

From here you can go back down the way you came to the parking lot 1.5 miles away, or you can connect to Backbone Trail and Mishe Mokwa Trail for a longer 6.25 mile loop route. Along Backbone Trail and Mishe Mokwa Trail there are a number of side trips you can take to make the hike a little longer to see additional points of interest, including the Balancing Rock, Split Rock Picnic Area, Tri Peaks, and Inspiration Point, where a short path leads to vast views, making for a very worthy side venture.
