Baramee Thai is a fine dining restaurant in the heart of historic downtown San Pedro. This comfy eatery has tables inside as well as a nice patio area, with combined seating for up to 60 guests. In addition to dining in, they also offer delivery (with online ordering), take-out, and catering services.
We visited on a Sunday afternoon and were greeted promptly upon walking through the door. It wasn’t very busy and the hostess informed us we could sit where we wanted. We chose a table inside. Menus were provided and she was quick to return and take our order. We opted for the Tuna Tartare as our starter and Yellow Curry with Beef, Jasmine Rice, and Chicken Pad Thai for the main course.
The staff was very attentive, checking in frequently to refill beverages, and the food arrived quickly. The Tuna Tartare was served with fired wontons. The combination of the crunchy wonton and the soft tuna with a hint of mint was delightful. The tuna was fresh and of high quality, not at all “fishy” tasting.
The main dishes arrived soon after our appetizer was finished. This was definitely one of the better Pad Thai dishes I have tried, with a nice balance of noodles, chicken, nuts, bean sprouts, green onions, and sauce. Pad Thai is one of my favorite meals and I can be quite picky. This one was seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of sauce.
The Yellow Curry was flavored very well with a hearty amount of protein, but I found the coconut curry sauce to be a little thin and not quite as creamy as I like. Luckily we had the Jasmine Rice to soak it up and the taste was spot-on, so any initial thoughts about the consistency of the sauce were quickly overshadowed by the overall deliciousness of the food. The rice was flawlessly cooked and made for a great accompaniment to the curry with its bountiful vegetables including potatoes, carrots, and onions. The serving sizes were perfect for the two of us to share family-style. We both finished our meal with full bellies, but not too stuffed like I often leave restaurants serving huge American-sized potions.
Our check was settled promptly, but we were not rushed to leave. My companion and I stayed for another half hour or so just chatting in the serene setting. The quiet atmosphere and attractive Thai decor lends itself as a nice backdrop for date night, and the quick service makes it a perfect destination for a quick lunch break. With food this delectable, I’ll certainly be making a return visit to Baramee Thai Restaurant in the near future.
